Our Visit to Malaysia has Promoted the Science and Technology Cooperation in Marine Area between China and Malaysia

On Sept 12th-16th, 2018, our Director Li Tiegang went to Malaysia for a working visit. The delegation first visited the University of Malaya, where they had an in-depth exchange with President Mr. Hashim and Vice-president Ms. Rahman on further promoting the construction of the China-Malaysia Joint Center for Marine Science and Technology and expanding bilateral cooperation in the field of marine science and technology. After that, Director Li Tiegang and his delegation met with Ms. Nor Aieni, President of UMT (University of Malaysia, Terengganu), to discuss the plan of applying the research ship "Discovery" to a comprehensive survey of the marine environment on the eastern coast of Malay Peninsula, and reached a preliminary consensus.
During the visit, Mr. Li attended the opening ceremony of the China-Malaysia Multidisciplinary Training Course on Ocean Observation Technology, which is a foreign aid training program of China. He also made a speech and encouraged 50 and more participants from Malaysian universities, enterprises and government agencies to actively participate in ocean observation research and promote cooperation between the two countries in the ocean field.
In order to ensure the smooth progress of the work of the China-Malaysia Joint Center for Marine Science and Technology, we and the University of Malaya jointly organized the 2018 Management Committee of the Joint Center for Marine Science and Technology on Sept 14. Mr. Li and his colleagues from the First Institute of Oceanography, SOA (FIO) attended the meeting, received the progress report of the Joint Center's work since its establishment, and set the priorities for the next step. Mr. Li and his delegation also visited the Bachok Marine Research Station of the United Center at the University of Malaya for exchange and guidance.
The China-Malaysia Joint Center for Marine Science and Technology, jointly sponsored by our institute and the University of Malaya, was officially established in Dec, 2017. It is an important platform for China to cooperate with Malaysia and Southeast Asian countries in marine science and technology. The main task for this Joint Center is to plan and expand the cooperation between China and Malaysia and their neighboring countries in the marine area, manage and coordinate the existing ocean cooperation projects, and provide assistance for the cooperation in the fields of funds, instruments and equipment, personnel exchanges, capacity-building, data and information sharing, and so on.
