Two FIO scientists invited as members of the China-Germany Geological Survey of Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica
Currently, the China-Germany geological survey of Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica is underway. As part of the 35th Antarctic Expedition by China, the survey involves Dr. Cui Yingchun and Dr. Liu Chenguang of FIO who serve as scientific personnel for this time. It is reported that it is the 13th comprehensive geological and geophysical survey since such survey was carried out for the first time in Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, by Germany in 1979.
The comprehensive geological survey started upon the completion of a series of field living training and helicopter rides related training carefully organized by the German side. As of December 14 local time, Cui Yingchun and Liu Chenguang have already conducted a 10-day geological survey with snowmobile and helicopter, during which Cui Yingchun ascended the Mount Overlord rising 3400 meters above sea level for sampling. Over 50 outcrops have been observed or sampled in the field, and about 200 kg geological samples have been collected in the area of 200 km around the Gondwana station operated by Germany. The results coming after comprehensive analysis of the samples will be of great significance to understand the major geological processes of Gondwana at the active continental margin of the Paleo-Pacific Ocean.
