The 2nd Training Course Undertaken by FIO on Marine Scientific Research in the South China Sea Successfully Concluded
The 2nd Training Course on Marine Scientific Research in the South China Sea was successfully held online from August 22 to 26, 2022. The course was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and organized by the First Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources (FIO, MNR). The opening ceremony was hosted by Li Tiegang, Director of FIO. Tan Qingsheng, representative of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and head on the Chinese side of the ASEAN-China Joint Working Group on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, and Wu Jun, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department of MNR, delivered speeches. More than 170 trainees from universities, research institutions, and government departments of China and ASEAN countries attended the training.
Ten experts in the field of marine science and policy research at home and abroad gave special lectures for the training, covering various topics such as climate and sea level changes in the South China Sea, mesoscale ocean dynamics, numerical prediction model for ocean, marine genetic analysis method, and international marine programs and cooperation. At the end of the training, trainee representatives shared their latest research progress, and two trainees were presented the "Young Ocean Scholar Award" set up for the course.
The training course is currently China's only international course on oceanographic research under the framework of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea. It was held for the second time with the number of students doubling compared to that of last year and was well received by all trainees. The success of the training course has injected new impetus into the maritime cooperation between China and ASEAN countries and made positive contributions to maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea.
