FIO co-hosts POGO Secretariat Western Pacific Regional Node

On January 24 (Beijing time), the 25th meeting of the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans, known as the POGO-25 meeting, was unveiled in Ensenada, Mexico. Heads, experts, and scholars of global marine scientific research institutions or international organizations (programs), totaling over 80 individuals, attended the event.

During the meeting, the signing ceremony of the Agreement for Hosting of POGO Secretariat Western Pacific Regional Node was held. The agreement was inked by Francisco Arias Isaza, Chair of POGO, Nicholas Owens, former Chair of POGO, LI Tiegang, Director General of the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), WANG Fan, Director of the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), and ZHENG Wei, Executive Director of the Ocean Decade Cooperation Center (ODCC) of China.

In 1999, POGO was initiated by three of the world's major marine research institutions: the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Southampton Oceanographic Centre, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. It stands as one of the important non-governmental organizations dedicated to marine science and technology, with a focus on the establishment of ocean observation systems, and an implementing partner for the UN Ocean Decade.

As the first regional office of POGO, the POGO Secretariat Western Pacific Regional Node is co-hosted by FIO, IOCAS, and ODCC. It is dedicated to establishing a high-end platform for collaborative ocean observation efforts across the Western Pacific Ocean and promoting the realization of goals, including improving capacity building and the public's ocean literacy.

The hosting of the POGO regional office enables FIO to further expand its international cooperation network, engage more profoundly in global governance and international cooperation in the ocean observation field, promote the realization of the UN Ocean Decade, and contribute its wisdom and strength to advancing the progress of global marine science and technology and building a community with a shared future.
