Director General LI Tiegang Leads FIO Delegation to Visit Madagascar
From May 21 to 22, LI Tiegang, Director General of the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) led a delegation to the University of Toliara, Madagascar and signed cooperation agreements for relevant projects. Director General for Scientific Research of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Madagascar, Vice President of the University of Toliara, Director of the Institute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences of the University of Toliara attended the meeting and signing ceremony.
Established in 1977, the University of Toliara of Madagascar is a public non-profit institution of higher education. Its affiliated Institute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Set up in 1993, mainly undertakes research on climate change in the Indian Ocean and conservation of biological resources and has achieved fruitful research outcomes in ocean climate change and marine biological research and conservation. Since 2016, FIO has cooperated with the Institute, conducted joint multidisciplinary observation cruises, and maintained close and long-term partnerships in ocean observations.
During the visit, the two sides reached a consensus on cooperation in fields including ocean observations, disaster prevention and mitigation, marine ecosystem, capacity building in marine science and technology and signed project agreements. The visit has deepened and expanded marine science and technology cooperation between FIO and relevant ocean-related institutions of Madagascar, which is of vital importance to the establishment of a platform for marine cooperation in the Western Indian Ocean and the enhancement of capabilities of China and Madagascar in marine disaster prevention and mitigation and response to climate change.
