The Opening Ceremony of 13th UNESCO/IOC-ODC International Training Course & the 3rd CLIVAR-FIO Summer School Successfully Held
On July 8, 2024, the 13th UNESCO/IOC Regional Training and Research Center on Ocean Dynamics and Climate (hereinafter referred to as “ODC Center”) Training Coursein conjunction with the 3rd CLIVAR-FIO Summer School, themed on “Ocean Model and Ecosystem Model” and “Biogeochemical Processes in Earth System Models”, was successfully convened in Qingdao.
This training co-hosted by First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ocean Decade International Cooperation Center (ODCC) will last for 2 weeks. In the first week, the training is jointly organized by ODC Center and BRICS PARADIGM Project and Elsevier and in the second week, the training is jointly organized by ODC Center and WCRP/CLIVAR Project Office. Mr. FENG Jun, Director of the Department of International Cooperation, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Prof. QIAO Fangli, Director of UNESCO/IOC ODC Center, Deputy Director General of FIO, Mr. XIE Longmu, Deputy Director of Qingdao West Coast New Area Management Committee, Prof. Mauro Cirano, Center for Mathematical and Natural Sciences (CCMN), Institute of Earth Sciences (IGEO) - Department of Meteorology, Ms. SUN Yan, Managing Director China of Global STM Journals of ELSEVIER, Mr. Vladimir Ryabinin, Former Executive Secretary of UNESCO/IOC, Prof. P. N. Vinayachandran, Director of the Centre for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences of Indian Institute of Science, as well as Dr. YIN Xunqiang, Deputy Director of UNESCO/IOC-RTRC-ODC Center attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. The opening ceremony was moderated by Ms. ZHENG Wei, Executive Director of the Ocean Decade International Cooperation Center of China.
ODC center aims to promote the international cooperation and enhance the research capacity in the WESTPAC region on ocean dynamics, air-sea interactions, climate change and numerical modelling through the provision of international annual training courses and workshops to junior scientists and doctoral/master students mainly from the member states of IOC in the Western Pacific. Since its establishment in 2011, ODC Center has carried out and coordinated a series of training courses, activities, workshops and international research programs, which are featured with both foundational and high-level courses/lectures, sufficient hands-on exercises, comfortable group discussions, and intensive interactions among trainees and experts. So far, it has received more than 1,500 applications and has provided training to 750 participants from 55 countries around the globe, with a number of world-renowned scholars invited by the Center to conduct two weeks of training for participants at a time.
