China-Thailand Workshop Training Successfully Held

From December 17-19, the China-Thailand Workshop Training on Marine Science Investigation and Observations was successfully held in Phuket, Thailand. Co-organized by the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) and the Thailand-China Joint Laboratory for Climate and Marine Ecosystem, the training attracted over 20 trainees from 5 universities and 3 research institutes of China and Thailand.

The training invited Prof. LIN Xiaopei of Ocean University of China, Prof. ZHOU Lei of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Researcher LIU Shengfa of FIO, Researcher Chalermrat Sangmanee of PMBC and Prof. Wirote Laongmanee of Burapha University to conduct a series of lectures on marine on-site observation and data application, marine geological investigation and compilation of maps and marine environment forecast and marine disaster early warning. Researcher GUO Jingsong of FIO and Researcher Chalermrat Sangmanee led the trainees to conduct on-site training and hands-on practices of marine instruments aboard the Research Vessel “Chakratong Tongyai” in the Andaman Sea. The trainees first attended safety and emergency training, and carried out the whole process of operation from pre-cruise instrument setup to mid-cruise submarine marker system connection, deployment and retrieval, and post-cruise observation data processing and analysis.

The trainees expressed that this training, integrating indoor courses and in-the-sea practices, enabled them to have direct and effective experience of marine observation and marine scientific research, during which they learned and acquired operation skills of marine observation and sample collection facilities. In the future, scientists of China and Thailand will continue to strengthen cooperation and exchanges to contribute to China-Thailand cooperation and communication in marine science and technology.
