FIO Actively Promotes China-Japan Collaboration on Joint Response to Typhoon Disasters

From December 24-26, 2024, a delegation led by WEI Zexun, Secretary of the CPC FIO Committee and Deputy Director General of FIO, visited the Ocean Policy Research Institute (OPRI) in Japan. The visit aimed to advance collaborative research efforts on response to typhoon disasters under the framework of Ocean Decade.

In June 2024, initiated by FIO and jointly applied by OPRI, the Shanghai Typhoon Institute (STI) of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and the China Institute For Marine Affairs (CIMA) of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, the Typhoon Forecast and Response in the Northwest Pacific (TFRiN) Project was successfully endorsed.

During the visit to OPRI, FIO delegation attended the Cooperation Forum hosted by OPRI. Dr. Atsushi Sunami, Chairman of OPRI, delivered opening remarks. Attendees included representatives from the China Institute for Marine Affairs (CIMA), the University of Tokyo, and other leading institutions. The forum facilitated insightful discussions on implementing the UN Ocean Decade in China and Japan, TFRiN’s two-year action plan, and Japan’s extensive experience in marine disaster response. Participants explored opportunities to strengthen partnerships and expand the scope of joint efforts in tackling the challenges posed by typhoons under the Ocean Decade framework.

The northwest Pacific Ocean is globally recognized as the most typhoon-prone region, presenting significant challenges for forecasting and disaster mitigation. By fostering a long-term cooperative mechanism among coastal nations, this initiative seeks to enhance predictive capabilities and resilience, contributing to a safer and more predictable ocean environment.
