Ocean Decade Project Led by FIO Endorsed
In March 2025, “Coastal hazards mitigation in Asian major deltas (CHARM)”, an Ocean Decade project led by FIO was endorsed. Affiliated with the “Mega-Delta Programme”, the project is led by QIAO Shuqin, a researcher at FIO, who will collaborate with researchers from the United States, Netherlands, Bangladesh, Thailand and China to conduct joint research.
As a key action to implement the Ocean Decade initiative, the project will assess the intensity, temporal and spatial distribution, risks, and future trends of coastal hazards in Asian major deltas. It will also design scientific and effective strategies for coastal hazards mitigation and conduct capacity building associated with coastal hazards mitigation among local governments and young generation.
In recent years, FIO has deeply engaged in the Ocean Decade initiative. The Ocean Decade Collaborative Center on Ocean-Climate Nexus and Coordination Amongst Decade Implementing Partners in P.R. China (DCC-OCC), the Ocean to climate Seamless Forecasting system (OSF) Programme and three Ocean Decade projects initiated and led by FIO were successfully endorsed. In the future, FIO will continue to strengthen marine scientific and technological innovation, enhance international marine cooperation, and make scientific and technological contributions to the building of a maritime community with a shared future.
