On July 28, the 5th Training Course on Marine Scientific Research in the South China Sea, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, and co-organized by FIO and Ocean University of China (OUC), successfully commenced. Attending the opening ceremony and delivering speeches were QIU Xinli, Counselor of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, WANG Antao, Deputy Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Natural Resources, QIAO Fangli, Deputy Director General of FIO, and LIU Yong, Vice President of OUC.
This training course is an important international cooperation initiative in the field of marine scientific research under the framework of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). First launched in 2021, this year marks its fifth session. The previous four sessions have trained over 480 participants from Southeast Asian countries. The one-week training will provide specialized instruction in marine observation technology, fundamental theories, and practical applications through various methods, including classroom lectures, hands-on practice, and study visits.
More than 110 researchers and government officials from ASEAN countries and China will participate in the training either online or offline, with 20 of the offline participants hailing from ASEAN member states.
The successful convening of the training course will enhance the professional capabilities of marine researchers from ASEAN countries, thereby strengthening the marine disaster prevention and mitigation capacities of the South China Sea coastal states. It holds significant importance for further enhancing exchanges and mutual trust between China and ASEAN countries, fully and effectively implementing the DOC, and promoting the building of a regional community with a shared future.
