Delegation of JKKNIU Visits FIO and Signs MOU

On September 29, a delegation led by Professor Md. Jahangir Alam, Vice Chancellor of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) from Bangladesh, visited FIO and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Director General LI Tiegang and representatives from relevant departments attended the event.

Director General LI Tiegang extended a warm welcome to Professor Alam and the accompanying scientists. In his speech, he noted that FIO and JKKNIU enjoy a decade-long history of cooperation, with mutual visits and exchanges starting in 2016. Joint geological survey cruises, including the Ganges-Brahmaputra River Joint Geological Survey in 2017 and the Bay of Bengal Joint Geological Survey in 2019, have laid a solid foundation for cooperation. Director General LI emphasized that Bangladesh is a critical region for global efforts to address climate change and marine disasters. The signing of the MoU presents an excellent opportunity to comprehensively enhance and expand the scope of cooperation. He expressed hope that both sides would jointly implement the Belt and Road Initiative and work together to advance international marine science and technology cooperation.

Vice Chancellor Alam expressed great optimism about the prospects of the collaboration. He stated that Bangladesh has urgent needs in coastal protection and disaster prevention and mitigation. FIO, with its first-class marine scientific capabilities and advanced survey facilities, is an ideal partner for JKKNIU. He believes that through the signing of the MoU, both sides will achieve fruitful results in joint research, talent cultivation, and technical exchanges, providing robust scientific and technological support for protecting Bangladesh's marine environment and enhancing disaster prevention and mitigation efforts.

Director LI Li of the International Cooperation Department chaired the meeting and provided an overview of FIO and its international cooperation efforts. Professor Md Mijanur Rahman, Registrar of JKKNIU, introduced the university’s profile. Subsequently, experts from both sides reviewed and enthusiastically discussed existing and potential areas for cooperation, including coastal erosion and delta sedimentation, endangered species protection, seamless marine and climate forecasting, heavy metal pollution, and talent cultivation.

The signing of the MoU marks the elevation of the bilateral relationship to a new stage encompassing multiple disciplines and fields. It also lays a solid foundation for jointly applying for scientific research projects and establishing long-term exchange mechanisms. In the future, both sides will work together to address marine disaster challenges in the Bay of Bengal region, support regional marine sustainable development, and contribute wisdom and solutions to global ocean governance and sustainable development.
