Yuriy Vasilenko, Deputy Director of POI Leads a Delegation to FIO

On March 30, Dr. Yuriy Vasilenko, Deputy Director of the Pacific Oceanological Institute (POI), Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Director of the FIO-POI Joint Research Center of Ocean and Climate, paid a visit to the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), China. Prof. WEI Zexun, Party Secretary and Deputy Director General of FIO, met with the delegation led by Dr. Yuriy Vasilenko. Prof. XU Xingyong, Deputy Director General of FIO, YANG Yafeng, Director of the International Cooperation Department, SHI Fengdeng, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Department, as well as members of the FIO-POI Joint Research Center attended the meeting.

During the talks, Prof. WEI Zexun stated that a long-standing profound friendship and sound cooperative partnership have been forged between FIO and POI. The FIO-POI Joint Research Center serves as a crucial platform for long-term bilateral cooperation in marine and polar research. He expressed the hope that both sides would continue to leverage this platform to deepen practical exchanges and cooperation across diverse fields, and jointly address various challenges in marine and climate studies.

Deputy Director Yuriy Vasilenko extended sincere gratitude to FIO for the warm invitation and reviewed the long history of friendly cooperation between the two institutions. He noted that fruitful achievements have been yielded through multiple joint scientific research initiatives, which fully embody mutual trust and pragmatic collaboration and lay a solid foundation for further in-depth cooperation. During the meeting, both sides held in-depth discussions on matters including co-organizing China-Russia marine science conferences and arranging joint scientific cruises. Both sides reached a consensus to further strengthen communication and collaboration, refine cooperative measures, and maintain regular exchanges to boost bilateral cooperation and advance the sound development of the joint research center.

Co-established and jointly operated by FIO and POI, the FIO-POI Joint Research Center was officially inaugurated in Vladivostok, Russia in September 2017. Since its establishment, the two sides have carried out sustained and pragmatic cooperation in joint research, collaborative oceanographic expeditions and academic personnel exchanges, achieving fruitful outcomes. Relevant cooperative activities have been reported by mainstream media in China and Russia, exerting extensive social influence.
