The main research topics of First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) involve element distribution and transformation law of natural environment of China’s coastal waters, oceans and polar sea areas, which contain marine resources and environmental geology, occurrence mechanism and forecasting methods of ocean disasters, air-sea interaction and climatic change, variation law of marine ecological environment and protection & comprehensive utilization of islands and coastal zones.
 

Since its foundation nearly 60 years ago, First Institute of Oceanography, MNR has gradually developed into a domestically and internationally renowned marine research institute, which employs approximately 300 senior research fellows, and is equipped with international advanced measuring equipment for oceanographic survey, experimental test equipment and research supporting facilities. With the completion of plentiful national major special marine projects, national key basic research projects, the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), projects supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, large-scale international cooperation projects and exploration & development projects of oceanographic engineering, First Institute of Oceanography, MNR has harvested a large amount of excellent scientific achievements, which embody the prominent contributions to the advancement of China’s marine scientific undertakings and the construction of marine economy!
